$20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles (1850–1907)
The $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle is one of the most iconic coins in American numismatics. First issued in 1850 following the California Gold Rush, these impressive gold coins circulated during a period of tremendous economic growth and westward expansion. Today, Liberty Head Double Eagles remain popular with both rare coin collectors and precious metals investors for their historical significance, substantial gold content, and collectible value.

History of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle

The discovery of gold in California in 1848 brought an unprecedented supply of precious metal into the United States economy. With the California Gold Rush in full swing, Congress authorized a new $20 gold denomination in 1849, creating what would become the largest regularly issued U.S. gold coin.

Following the striking of an extremely rare pattern coin in 1849, regular production of the Liberty Head Double Eagle began in 1850 at the Philadelphia and New Orleans Mints. Production expanded to San Francisco in 1854 and Carson City in 1870, with Denver joining in 1906.

Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield, surrounded by stars and rays.

Each Double Eagle contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold, giving the coin significant intrinsic value in addition to its numismatic appeal. With a diameter of 34 millimeters and a weight of 33.436 grams, the $20 Liberty remains one of the most recognizable American gold coins ever produced.

Three Types of Liberty Head Double Eagles
Throughout its 58 years of production, the Liberty Head Double Eagle underwent several design modifications, resulting in three distinct types collected today.

Type I: No Motto (1850–1866)
The original Liberty Head Double Eagle design featured a heraldic eagle on the reverse without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The denomination appeared as "TWENTY D."
Type I Double Eagles include many of the series' most historically significant and valuable issues, particularly those struck at the New Orleans and Carson City Mints.

Type II: With Motto (1866–1876)
In 1866, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse within an arc of stars above the eagle. The denomination continued to read "TWENTY D."
This design was produced at Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City and includes several scarce issues that are highly desirable among collectors.

Type III: With Motto, TWENTY DOLLARS (1877–1907)
The final design modification came in 1877 when the denomination on the reverse was changed from "TWENTY D." to "TWENTY DOLLARS."
Type III Double Eagles were produced through 1907 and represent the most commonly encountered coins in the series. Many examples from the 1890s and early 1900s survive today, making them especially popular with collectors and gold investors.

Rare Dates and Valuable Liberty Head Double Eagles
While many Liberty Head Double Eagles are readily available, assembling a complete collection by date and mintmark is an extraordinary challenge. The series contains numerous major rarities, some valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.

Among the most desirable dates are the 1854-O, 1856-O, and 1870-CC, all exceptionally rare coins that command substantial premiums regardless of condition.

Other important dates include the 1871-CC, 1879-O, 1885, 1886, and 1891, along with the proof-only issues of 1883, 1884, and 1887. Many early New Orleans Mint Double Eagles are also considerably scarcer than their Philadelphia and San Francisco counterparts.

Condition plays an important role in determining value. Even relatively common dates can carry significant collector premiums when found in exceptionally well-preserved Mint State grades.

Liberty Head Double Eagles as Gold Investments
In addition to their appeal as collectible coins, Liberty Head Double Eagles have long been a popular way to own physical gold.

Later-date examples, particularly those minted between 1894 and 1907, are frequently traded for their gold content. Many circulated examples in Extremely Fine (XF) and About Uncirculated (AU) condition sell at prices influenced primarily by the current market value of gold, with additional premiums based on date, condition, and demand.
Unlike modern bullion coins, Liberty Head Double Eagles offer the added appeal of owning an authentic piece of American history. Their combination of nearly one troy ounce of gold and more than a century of history makes them attractive to collectors and investors alike.
